WoGE #444

My turn again?

Luis' WoGE #443 seemed very familiar, I was sure I had come across it somewhere. It took me a while to remember where, and then I found the very obvious Waw-an-Namus volcano in Libya. Zooming in on the crater removed most of the desert references, which made it a bit more difficult. :)

For WoGE #444, I decided to stay with the desert theme:

Where and what is it? And is there really any correct information on the geology to be found?
For any new players to Where on (Google) Earth, simply post a comment with latitude and longitude and write something about the (geologic/geographic/hydrographic) feature in the picture. If you win, you get to host the next one. Previous WoGEs are collected by Felix on his blog and a KML file.

  1. Everyone has silent,

Actually it's easy to find because of colors and it is prety close to Richat Structure.

I can't find well documentation around this place, just some papers not directly related the place. The deposits occur within the Archaean igneous complex and Birrimian Regueïbat Shield.

  2. Finding good information is the big challenge hee, apart from finding repeated statements that "the whole mountain is magnetite". Which it isn't, but there is a fair amount of magnetite there, enough to make compasses useless. The main ore is Hematite. The two main mines are both in the high-concntration ridge, although the whole thing is really high grade ore - it's a classical BIF. Banded Iron Formations are found in many widely scatterd places, but they are all of the same age - that of the Great Oxygenation Event. So this ore body is definitely on the shield, and not in th eigneous complex. And it's sedimentary, and could have formed at no other time in the Earth's history. :)

  4. Yes, exactly big challenge. I actually find about BIF and mining data from companys page but there is not enough. I just gave information from geological map. Anyway we are still learning.
#445 will online in an hour at wogekubi.blogspot.com.tr
