Where on Google Earth #595

WoGE has been slow lately, so I waited a bit after I realised that Felix' WoGE #594 had to be in Madagascar.

This one is not:

As always, the first person to post the position and whatever is interesting about the geology/hydrology/geowhatever in this location, wins the privilege of hosting the next WoGE.

Previous WoGEs are collected by Felix on
his blog and a KML file.

Rapa Nui (Easter Island), Rano Raraku volcano.

Large swells, steep cliffs, and shadows on the south side of the volcanic cone hint that this place is in the southern hemisphere on the open ocean, likely an island. Roads and fields show signs of human habitation.

Geologically, Rapa Nui is made of three coalesced volcanoes hotspot volcanoes, formed by the Easter hotspot. The rocks here are generally iron-rich, primarily hawaiite and basalts, but rhyolites are present in small volumes (https://dx.doi.org/10.1007%2FBF00385783).

Rano Raraku is the source of tuff (consolidated volcanic ash) from which most of the island's famous Moai (head statues) were carved (http://www.eisp.org/120/).

  3. You got it - and well before easter, too! With the slow tempo lately I thought there was a real possibility that posting something else would last until pentecost. :)
